Application of PVP in Care Products: Key Additives for Thickening and Skin Improvement

Jun 14, 2026

The core requirement of hair care products (shampoo, shower gel, body lotion, etc.) is to balance cleansing power and skin sensation, avoiding dryness and tightness of the skin/hair after cleaning, while ensuring uniform product quality, avoiding layering, and easy foaming and rinsing during use. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is widely used in various care products due to its thickening, emulsifying stability, and skin improvement effects. It can regulate product texture, improve user experience, and enhance product cleaning and moisturizing performance.

1、 Core mechanism of action: Triple optimization of thickening, emulsification, and skin sensation

The mechanism of PVP in skincare products revolves around thickening, emulsion stabilization, and skin improvement. By collaborating with surfactants, moisturizers, oils, and other ingredients in skincare products, it achieves a dual improvement in product quality and user experience

1. Thickening mechanism: PVP has good thickening properties and can adjust the viscosity of care products, avoiding products that are too thin, easy to flow, or too thick and difficult to use. Meanwhile, PVP can enhance the stability of the product, prevent delamination and sedimentation during storage, and ensure uniform quality.

2. Emulsification stabilization mechanism: PVP can be used as an emulsion stabilizer, which can work together with surfactants to reduce the interfacial tension between water and oil, prevent the separation of oil and fat components from water in the cleaning products, and ensure that the product is uniform in texture, easy to foam when used, and the foam is delicate and rich.

Skin improvement mechanism: PVP molecules can adsorb onto the surface of the skin or hair, forming a breathable protective film that reduces water loss during the cleaning process, avoiding dryness and tightness of the skin/hair after cleaning. At the same time, it can reduce the irritation of surfactants, enhance the mildness of the product, and make the skin fresh, smooth, and the hair soft and shiny after cleaning.

2、 Typical Applications and Process Control

1. Shampoo: add 1.0% -2.0% PVP K40 into the shampoo, which can adjust the viscosity of the shampoo, make the shampoo water quality even, easy to bubble, and the foam is delicate. At the same time, it can improve the skin feeling after shampoo, avoid dry hair, and irritability. With silicone oil, amino acids and other ingredients, it can achieve the dual effect of "cleaning+nourishing". Process points: mix PVP with surfactant (such as amino acid surfactant) and deionized water, stir until completely dissolved, add humectant, essence and other ingredients, homogenize, adjust the pH value to 5.5 6.5, and ensure the stability of the product.

2. Shower Gel: Adding 0.8% -1.5% PVP K30 to shower gel can enhance its thickening effect and emulsion stability, avoid layering and sedimentation, and improve the skin feel after bathing, avoiding dryness and tightness, making the skin refreshing and smooth, especially suitable for dry skin. For amino acid shower gel, PVP can also enhance the product's mildness and reduce irritation.

3. Body lotion: Adding 1.2% -2.5% PVP K40 to body lotion can adjust its texture, making it easier to apply and absorb. At the same time, the moisturizing effect of PVP can lock in skin moisture, providing long-lasting nourishment to the skin and avoiding excessive stickiness. After use, the skin feels refreshed and non sticky, suitable for all skin types.

3、 Advantages and Industry Application Trends

Compared with traditional cleaning aids such as xanthan gum and guar gum, PVP has the advantages of good thickening effect, strong emulsification stability, and refreshing skin feel. It also has excellent compatibility with various cleaning ingredients and will not affect the cleanliness and mildness of the product. The current washing and care industry is developing towards the direction of "mild cleaning, nourishing and moisturizing". PVP, as a non irritating and biodegradable additive, has been widely used in high-end products such as amino acid washing and silicone oil free washing. It can not only meet consumers' needs for skin feel, but also improve the comprehensive quality of products, becoming one of the core ingredients in washing and care product formulas.
